Stayin’ alive

I’ve never saved a life before but yesterday I helped save one. I was in the kitchen assembling the ingredients for dinner when I looked out at the roof of the house next to ours.  There are usually some birds hanging around there so I glanced in the direction.  What I saw horrified me.  A large crow or raven with what I took to be a mouse, was hopping up the chimney.  But what it had was no mouse; it was a baby rabbit!

I cried out, “Oh, no.”  Our younger daughter called from the living room to ask what was happening.  “There’s a bird on the roof with a baby mouse.”  I rushed out to frighten the bird away, but couldn’t see if the rabbit was alive.  It had either been dropped or rolled into the gutter.  Our daughter ran up to the flat roof of our garage, which overlooks our neighbor’s roof, and shouted that the rabbit appeared to be alive.

I hurried back outside; she slung the ladder from the garage roof over the edge.  I grabbed it, put it up to our neighbor’s house, held it while she grabbed latex gloves from her art supplies in her car and climbed the ladder.  I saw her reach out several times, then her hand came out holding a petrified baby rabbit.  She climbed carefully down the ladder and placed the rabbit in some deep underbrush.  I imagine it sat there for a long time before heading for its home.  We went back to our home, too, feeling  good about saving a life.

    Crows can be nasty…

    • I know it’s their nature, but I’m glad we could save that little rabbit. Maybe it won’t eat my veggies this summer out of thankfulness. 🙂 Probably not, but it’s a nice thought!!

What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, that or the other thing.
