In the last six months, I’ve been attempting to get our house packed, repaired and prettied so that it can be put on the market and we can finally get moved and be in the same place again. What have I learned?
It’s very difficult to separate memories and emotions from “things”, making it hard to get rid of “things.”
It would have made more sense to do repairs and improvements over the years than waiting until we wanted to sell the house.
There are indeed people who are craftsmen and take pride in what they do. Recommendations are invaluable for finding these craftsmen.
When push comes to shove, I have enough of my mom’s skills at doing things around the house to accomplish a lot more than I ever thought I could.
Having do get everything done on my own and by myself is both easier and infinitely more difficult than if we were both here.
I thought I’d share a few pictures of what the house looks like for today’s open house. Our house was the first enamel porcelain house in the world. The enamel is now covered by siding that was put on before we bought the house. The frame is metal as are the tiles in our half bath, the original tiles in the main bathroom and the backs of the stairs! Here’s a link where you can see a picture (taken by someone while we lived here) and read a bit about it: http://www.clevelandareahistory.com/search?q=porcelain+enamel+house. Come in and enjoy your visit.

Beautiful house Janet. Good luck with the sale.
Thanks.

Great floors! And two cats in the yard?
Are you moving to the other side of the street?
Ha, no cats. We’re moving from Cleveland to the Chicago area, a bit further than across the street.
janet
Happy moving!
Thanks, Chris. Have to sell the house first. 🙂
well, with a floor like that!! hope you get lucky soon
Janet the house looks lovely and thank you for the link about it. I had heard of a porcelain-enamel, but never knew a house had been built using it. Good luck with the sale, hope it happens quickly.
Dee
Thanks, Dee, I certainly hope so too.

You have a magnificent place to call home Janet!
Thanks, Joe. Hopefully someone else will want to call it home soon. 🙂
janet
A beautiful home you have here! Thanks for sharing with us!
Thanks and you’re welcome. 🙂

So now that I’m on night float, I spend an hour in the morning watching HGTV before bed. I wonder if they wouldn’t be interested in your house? Miss you guys!
-Rachel
Rachel, good to see you here! I’ve never watched HGTV, so I have no idea. But contact them if you want and let them know it’s for sale. 🙂 Miss you, too!

I love your house! And I read it’s a special one and unique. I like the idea to use porcelain enamel – it sounds better to me than the common stuff what you have to replace or to renovate every year. But it’s always a little bit sad to remove things from their traditional place and storage it in boxes, that’s for me as I would box parts of my life. Thanks for the house tour!
It’s fun to be able to share the house like this, something I couldn’t do without the internet. Special and unique, while nice in many ways, translates generally into “That will cost you more to fix that normal.” 🙂 The house looks great right now, but as if real people don’t live here which, of course, is the way the realtor wants it to look–pristine. I hope people show up for the open house today.
janet
I would like to visit your house and I hope you will get a lot of visitors today – maybe even people with a sense for history( like me lol)
That’s a very nice house! I never heard about porcelain-enamel houses before.
Neither had we. 🙂
janet
Lovely, full of character. Best of luck for today, I’m sure they’ll love it.
Thanks, Sandra.

Selling my house was one of the most destabilising experiences I have been through. I so get your comment about separating memories and emotions from things: objects become physical symbols of feelings and events. your house is beautiful and will be part of someone else’s life story: the symbolic issue will live on, strong. 😀
I can’t wait for that right person/people who love the house as we did when we first saw it. But no matter who buys it, we’re ready to move on to another point in our lives and will have all sorts of wonderful memories of our time in this house, where our marriage began (after one year in a rental) and where our girls grew up. Exciting times.

I really like the simplicity, the clean lines, home-iness, B&B kind of country Inn style of your decorations, the soft woods, the old-style pantry and what seems to be a wonderful old-style linoleum floor – it’s just great. A nice showcase. Again, good luck with selling it. Randy
Thanks, Randy. Hopefully it won’t take too long but we’ll see.

Good luck today, Janet. Your home shows beautifully, and its unique construction and architectural history should have great appeal to prospective buyers. I hope it sells quickly–
I hope so, too, vb, and for the patience to wait until it does.
janet
I agree to: “… its unique construction and architectural history should have great appeal to prospective buyers!”
We can but hope!

It is beautiful, Janet. All the rooms are meticulously clean, decorated and prettied up. Love your antiques, too. I love antiques and have some of my own (I and my husband, together). You will not have a problem at all selling it, as pretty as it is. Do you have it currently under contract, now? I visited a bit with your husband today on the blog as she looked at my recent posts. Hope you’ll both be together again, soon. 🙂
Thanks, Joyce. I love our furniture and things that we’ve gathered over the years. I hope someone will love the house as much as I do. No contract yet; the house has only been listed on the market for a week or less. Only a couple people came to the open house, but even though it’s a bit disappointing, I’m leaving the finding of the right buyer in God’s more-than-capable hands, as I can’t do anything about it but wait with patience and keep the house looking good. As much as I love the house, I’ll love being with Bill again more. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by. Sorry I haven’t been around much on blogs but I’ve been rather busy!! 🙂 Have a blessed week.
janet
You too (have a blessed week) and hope all goes well with the house sale. The housing industry is booming. My brother and his wife are moving out of Titusville, Fla. this next week or so after he was laid from NASA in Feb. and want to relocate here in Colo. to be closer to our family as they do not have children, so hope they find a good place to buy, but the home prices are going up again here, and now are really jumping up the costs up here in Northern Colorado. Best to you and Bill.
I meant to say, ‘he’ looked at my posts. Sorry. Saw my ‘typo’ above.
