Glancing out the window a few days ago, I saw the six or seven squirrels that call our yard home frolicking madly around the yard. But I became concerned when I noticed one squirrel lying unmoving on its stomach. I had visions of it dying there, which would mean I’d have to pick it up and throw it out, not something I was looking forward to doing. Finally, I opened the window and made some noise until the squirrel moved and in a few more minutes, it was up racing madly around the yard with the rest of them. What a relief!
Furry frolicking

Perhaps there was a spot of ‘courting’ going on?
Oh…I think you could be right about that!
Could be, Sandra. I didn’t think of that. I was too worried he might be dying. 🙂

Oh, I would have thrown a rock to finish him! Sorry, I think squirrels are cute but when they come and harvest everything I grow in my garden, I can’t stand them. 🙂
I know what you mean and deer, chipmunks and rabbits are the same.

And lizards here too.
You’re right.

They have been stealing my green tomatoes. Not cute:(.
Loved this post of the squirrels in action though. Thanks!
Other love-hate relationships of that nature: chipmunks and deer. Racoons–just no.

“Hey guys, guess what I am? Road kill!” Maybe he was playing “the invisible squirrel”. Or maybe he’s more prone to gravity than the others. Or maybe he’d eaten too much?
Haha.
He was probably doing the “plank challenge”
🙂

Hi, I love these little moments. I had one myself the other day – if you’re curious you can check it out at http://stuffenonsense.wordpress.com/2013/07/11/first-steps/
I’m enjoying your blog very much.
Just read your story. What fun!! I’m glad you’re enjoying the blog. That means a lot to me. Hope to see you around some more.

🙂 Squirrels always look like they’re having a wonderful time bouncing around! I’d have wondered about the quiet one too – that kind of behavior is just plain unsquirrelian.
Maybe he was “base” for tag. 🙂 When they’re running and chasing, they’re so fast you can barely keep track of them except by their chattering. Are you boiling in NJ? We are here (both places.)
janet
OH yes. When I’m outside I keep looking around for pools of lava or something like that to go with the temperature. Is it going to be January soon?
They know how to enjoy the summer. specially the guy int the “bed side rug position” :o)
That’s definitely his position!

This is so fun 🙂 I love squirrels!! When my hubby & I went to Philly & Québec, we always managed to photograph one or two.
Great candid shots and yay, the one lying down was just lazy :).
Years ago when we had a bird feeder, the squirrels and we were engaged in constant warfare: we trying to keep them out of the feeders, them trying to get the seeds. We finally put a baffle on the pole and that won the war. 🙂
janet
I am glad that you settled that…
Squirrel warfare 🙂
Ha!
I love watching the wild squirrels here at play – they can get quite animated! Was it very hot that day? The ones here will stretch out on their bellies to cool off for a bit.
I don’t think it was terribly hot, but it might have been for the squirrel. No matter what the reason, they were having a blast…and so was I.

One thing I have never really dabbled in seriously is photography. Like most people these days, I take awful pictures with my phone. But I sure wish I’d had a camera on hand a couple of weeks ago to catch my neighbour’s raccoons in action. I love watching animals, darling, and it looks like you had a lot of fun watching these squirrels.
I had a great time. This family of seven or so grew up in our yard and completely drove a dog we fostered for a week out of his mind. We also have a number of rabbits who will appear on the blog soon. I love photography as well as writing, so I go back and forth between, and sometimes combine, the two.

Weird!
It was a bit, but funny, too, once I realized he wasn’t dead.
