There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.
There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.
Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.
I like to listen. I have learned a great deal from listening carefully. Most people never listen.
The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.
When writing a novel a writer should create living people; people not characters. A character is a caricature.
~Ernest Hemingway
[…] Thanks Janet for your great and inspiring post! […]
My pleasure, Georgia.
I love these quotations!
Thanks. Hope your Sunday’s off to a good start.

That could be very interesting when all would do sober what they said with booze :o)
I think his hope was that once doing that would be embarrassing enough to stop it the second time although from what I know of him, he was a hard drinker.

True wisdom comes with experience and trials. I have come to understand the listening advice and realize it can only help to listen twice as much as I speak.
Dear Janet,
I have quote #2 over my desk. The last one is good to remember as a novelist. Thanks for sharing.
Shalom,
Rochelle
My pleasure, Rochelle, and blessings on your day.

I like
“The world breaks everyone,
and afterward,
some are strong
at the broken places.”
It’s true for bones, too. Often when a break heals, that spot is stronger than before.

Anything from the best short story writer, ever…is good in my book.
And I hope you have a book someday, Tom. Have a great Sunday!

I’m with Tom on Hemingway
Like Rochelle, I have quote number two on my desk. Number 4 should be a given for anyone wanting to write.
Hope all is well with your move
Take care
Dee
Dee, we survived move-in day (Thursday) and I’m making a bit of headway on unpacking, although it will be a bit tough with so much less space. I’ll just get more exercise running to the basement for things that used to be in the kitchen or bathroom. 🙂 We won’t be parking in the garage for some time, but it will happen. I’m taking my time and not going crazy, which is good for all of us. But the part of the house we live in the most is in good order, so less stressful.
Blessings on your day,
janet
Another great quote by Hemingway! 😀
