Just in time for Christmas…2Wheels2Kids

My husband had a dream.

An avid cyclist, he wanted to get bikes to children whose parent or parents couldn’t afford them.  Every child should have the joy of riding his or her own bike, of seeing a bike if not under the Christmas tree, at least in the garage.  So we started with the small idea of giving bikes to three children this year for Christmas.

We started a little foundation–2Wheels2Kids.  We have a very rudimentary website:  http://2wheels2kids.wordpress.com/.  We opened a bank account and have checks, not with our name yet or anything, but so we can keep track of what comes in and what goes out.

We got started.  We bought one bike that will go to a boy near us and we sent checks to two families, one in Canada (we’re international), so that two more children will receive a bike for Christmas.  But wait!  There’s more.

We just received our first check today, big enough to buy a good bike for another child, and we have another child that needs a bike.  Something’s happening here and what it is is exactly clear–a few people are catching our vision and are excited enough to participate.

We don’t have tax-exempt status yet, so if you donate, “all” you get is knowing you helped make a child happy for Christmas.  But we plan to apply at some point.

We’re blessed to be able to do this and excited that someone has bought, literally, into the vision.   We don’t know where this will go or how big it will get, but we can’t wait to see.

If you’re someone who prays, we cherish any prayers you might care to pray for this tiny organization.  If you blog and would like to share the information, we’d love that as well.  If you’d like to contribute, that’s wonderful, too.  Just let me know and I’ll get the address out to you.  And if you’d just like to be happy with us, well, that’s great, too.  After all, ’tis the season.

  1. What an absolutely wonderful thing you have started. I have sent you to my Facebook page.

  2. This is a fabulous idea. Kudos to you both for your selfless generosity. I’ll share on Facebook too!

  3. It’s a great idea and I bet all children will remember how they got their first bike.

  4. Amy says:

That’s a great idea! Are you supporting certain age of children?

  5. I love this idea. My first bikes were donated gifts and I wouldn’t have had the same childhood without them.

  6. This is a wonderful idea. All kids should have a bike. When I was growing up (in a very poor dysfunctional household) my bike was my best friend. It probably saved my sanity. I’m sure there are 1000’s of stories like that. I really love love love this idea Janet.

  7. Hi Janet, what a wonderful idea. I agree every kid should have a bike to ride. I remember my first bike was a second hand one my parents gave me for Christmas one year. I rode a lot of miles on it over the years. In those days the bikes we rode had no gears, only the rich kids has those bikes with their three gears. I wish you and your husband well in this venture. excellent idea, I do hope it grows for you.

What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, that or the other thing.
