Weekly Photo Challenge: Afloat

The Weekly Photo Challenge theme of “Afloat” this week is terribly timely in light of the bad weather sweeping the central and now eastern and southeastern US yesterday and today.  There are things literally afloat due to flooding.  In Naperville, the river through downtown is out of its bed, although fortunately not into the basements of nearby businesses as happened in 2013 when I took this photo.  An entire small town in Illinois has been destroyed, leaving people and their lives afloat in uncertainty.  The storms aren’t yet over, but I think this photo, which caught my eye two years ago, is appropriate at a variety of levels.

  1. Sad commentary but good photo and reflection.

    • When I took this photo, there was very bad flooding all around us. The parking lot, although inconvenient and highly usual, was nothing, but it made for a good photo op. 🙂

      Have a great weekend, Judy!

  2. Haha, it just looks like it’s just dipping its toes in the water!

    • It’s funny that you saw it that way, Laura To me it looked sad and marooned. Enjoy your weekend!

      • I must say I wrote that first comment before I read the paragraph and was about to follow it up otherwise I feared I looked rather heartless! It’s strange how the trolley looked so jolly to me at first, but now it’s taken on quite a sad and tragic air after reading about the context within which you took it.

      • Laura, I didn’t feel you were heartless at all! If there were no commentary, there wouldn’t be the same context for everyone. No worries. 🙂

  8. Allan G. Smorra says:

A very good solution to this challenge, Janet. It conjures up memories of the floods we had here, back when we had rain. Ω

  9. Very clever, Janet. I’m sure this will be one of the more unique entries this week. ❤

  12. Enjoyed your response to the theme. Nicely captured.

    • Thanks so much, Sally. I hope Saturday’s looking good for you. The sun’s out here and no wind. Supposed to get into the 60’s, so that’s not bad. Although there were some terrible storms a few days ago, some with tornadoes, we were spared any damage, for which I’m thankful.

  13. Empty and forlorn, lost. A silent image of your words. Wishing all the best for the ones that are in need now.

  14. Angeline M says:

The weather has been merciless this year to everyone, with over-abundance to some and meagerness to others. Hope there is no further flooding. Photo is a great entry for the challenge.

    • Angeline, if we could only spread the moisture and other growth necessities around equitably, life would be much easier. Too bad it doesn’t work like that. I’m happy you enjoyed the photo, though, and have a wonderful weekend.

  15. This made me laugh out loud. 😉

  16. I hasten to add, the photograph, not the flooding.

  17. That is a great shot.
Very creative, artsy, and speaks to me…

  18. A sad story which is told so well by this photo…
