Photography and Non-SLR Digital Photo Challenge: Black and White…natural vs. manmade

“Nothing is black and white.” Often that’s the case. Other times, things or choices are black and white, or should be. We see very little in the world in literal black and white, so when we see photos that way, it forces us to look at the details, the patterns, the shapes, the elemental thing, with no distraction of color.  Perhaps that’s something we should do more often in life: get rid of the distractions and trappings, attempt to see people and situations for what they really are.

On a lighter note, I offer two contrasting black and white photos for your perusal.  One is from nature, the other manmade. Each has its own beauty, its own place in the world, its own use.  Hopefully we can see those around us in this sort of black and white, to their advantage and to ours

  1. Good morning, Janet!
Nothing like reading insightful words together with beautiful pictures.
Thank you for the wisdom present in every word.
    Wish you a lovely week.
    Lucile

  2. Each has its appeal, but the second–car light or flashlight or some kind of reflective light–has been taken from its usual context and elevated. The use of monochrome also brings a focus on the contrast and tones. Happy Photo Challenge.

I love your images, they look good together nice contrast.

  4. Angeline M says:

The flower is absolutely delicious, and I was going to say I favored that one most…but I keep looking at the headlight and see more and more beauty in the facets within the headlight. Great entry.

    • That flower is actually a dead something from last fall/winter, Angeline, which looks quite nice in brown (its color right now) or B&W. But I really like the headlight myself. It turned out really well in B&W. Glad you like them both.

I like them both. Today the first photo calls to me a little more.

  6. Suzanne says:

Your reflections on seeing life in black and white are very interesting. Perhaps that would make things clearer but then again, perhaps not. Your second image is intriguing for it takes more than a glance to figure out what it is even though it’s in black and white.

Beautiful insight. Thank you for the inspiration.

  8. Jane Lurie says:

Both shots are very interesting, Janet.

  9. Well you sure had fun with both of there pics!! I can see your wit in both. The seemingly maurading plant and the threatening headlamp both tell stories of beauty. I have learned that turning photos into black and white gives one an idea of how strong the image is. If it doesn’t look good in B&W it may not be a good pic after all.
    Happy Tuesday now 🙂

    • The plants that are left after fall has come are often good subjects for B&W, I think. They’re already in browns, so that tends to translate well. The headlight photo looks pretty good in color, too, although there isn’t lots of color. The bones of a photo often come through well in B&W.

Both are beautiful Janet and your philosophy too, wise words.

  11. Very interesting photos. I like it!
    I’ll follow your work!!
