One morning during our stay at Cape May, New Jersey, the fog was quite thick and enticing, so I hurried out for a walk with iPad in hand. It felt as though I were walking with shoes wrapped in cotton; the air was quiet, close, and damp. The photo opportunities were numerous and beautiful, but most enjoyable of all was the feeling of being completely alone in the quiet. The original photo was almost naturally black and white and after I made it monotone, I tried two different, simple edits. Which one appeals to you?
This week is the launch of a new title for this photo challenge: “Sally D’s Mobile Photography Challenge.” The challenge is for any photos taken with non-traditional cameras and this week’s theme (theme’s repeat monthly) is “Black and White.” If you enjoy mobile photography, consider joining us every Monday.
For me, #2 although the first one is also very appealing in an eerie way…
I really like the eerie feeling, Emily, and I’m glad you do, too.
janet
I much prefer the second edit. What a very atmospheric shot. Love it!
I was very happy with the way the photo came out, looking just the way I saw it. It was quite a morning for photos and for relaxation.
janet
The last one appeals the most to me. It must have been lovely to walk in that fog…I can really see you strolling before my eyes. Like a movie. Beautiful.
Lena, it was a glorious, silent morning, very wet and beautiful. I was so glad to be out there.
janet
Good morning, Janet.
Very nice shot. I like the top one best.
Randy
Good morning to you, too, Randy. Thanks for stopping by. I always enjoy seeing you.
janet
The bottom image, with its contrast and clarity! Great!
Thanks very much, Sue. Enjoy your Monday.
janet
Thanks, Janet, and you!
I like the third shot. 🙂
I don’t really know which I prefer, Judy, but number three seems to be winning so far. Happy Monday to you!
janet
The bottom pic. It’s the Goldilocks effect. Not too stark, not too soft–just right.
I like the way you put that, Tom. 🙂 Have a great week.
janet
I actually love the original best, number 3 after that.
So nice to see you, Scott. I like the original (the original tweaked just slightly to be B&W), too. Hope all’s well with you and have a great week.
janet
Enjoyed your description and the images really captured the beauty of the morning’s soil;went magic. Happy Photo Challenge.
Thanks, Sally, and hurrah for your new title! Hope your week’s off to a wonder-filled start. I had a lovely walk just a short while ago and now it’s time to get some breakfast and get things done.
janet
Oh, do I detest auto correct. I meant the morning’s silent magic.
I’m with you on auto correct and the worst part is, I’ve usually just hit “Reply” or “Post” when I notice it and there’s no going back!

Good day, Janet.
Very beautiful shot and I go for the bottom one. Beautiful contrast with the vignette which brought the center forward making it more powerful.
Cheers,
Lucile
Lucile, as always, thanks for a thoughtful and useful comment. I hope your day has been going well and continues to do so!
janet
Janet, you’re very welcome. My pleasure. All is going well and I hope the week will continue like that. Thanks! And have a lovely week.
Lucile
Beautiful! #3 is my favorite edit but this scene is really lovely in each choice.
Thanks, Lisa. I can’t really decide myself which I like better. Of course, I’m happy you liked all of them!
janet
I like the vignetting in the second one, Janet. It seems to frame the sun.
Thanks, Cathy. That one is a soft focus edit on Picasa 3 and you can move the center of the focus around as well as enlarge it.
janet
Janet, those shots are like art to me … even if I’m not a bigger fan of B&W. Amazing how great shots those smart phones delivers. The last one is my favorite one … because the sun is so big. What a fantastic start of a Monday.
What a lovely thing to say! Thanks. I tend to like color as well, but this seemed to be the most atmospheric in B&W and since it was almost monochrome to start, that made it all the easier. 🙂 I hope the rest of your Monday is wonderful, too.
janet
Janet, truly magical images …. but you always provide us with outstanding shots. My Monday has been a bit painful, but bedtime now. Tomorrow another day. *smile
Sleep the sleep of the contented and thank you for the lovely compliment. It means a lot. Praying for a better tomorrow for you.
I really like the second photo, Janet. The slightly out of focus image seems to enhance the fog and add mysteriousness.
That’s what I thought, too, Angeline, so I’m glad it worked. As always, thanks for visiting and commenting. It’s much appreciated.
janet
Beautiful images, for me especially the first one! can’t believe these were done on a mobile, very good show of skill!
I’m happy you like them. Almost all the photos on my blog are from my iPhone 5s, although there are some from my iPad, which I had before I got the phone, and some from my Nikon. The main reason I got the phone was for the camera and I’m thrilled with the job it does.
janet
Some phones can take very nice images, I’m glad to hear you’re pleased with the quality of yours 🙂 Not an apple user myself so I can’t compare it to mine ^^
I enjoy moments of solitude, like the one you experienced.
The third photo was calling to me, so I chose it. 🙂 I like its stark clarity. At the same time, I like the blurred effect of the second photo. It’s like looking through a mirror darkly. Nicely done, Janet!
Stunning photos, Janet!
Thanks, Marion. I’m so happy you like them so much. Hope your week’s starting well.
janet
I love the dreamlike atmosphere and I love trees: a super combination.
Yes, thank you, all is well. How are you doing?
Doing well. Thanks for asking. I’m enjoying spring and looking forward to spending some time with my parents and our younger daughter soon.

Hi Janet, I love the photos you have presented this week. One could attach a variety of emotions to them, the third particularly grabs my attention for the strength and vulnerability I see, portrayed in the tree. Always enjoy your lens and pens post each Monday. I am scouring my recent photos for a suitable black and white. I just got a new phone yesterday and still working out how to use it…..
Hi, Amanda. I’m pleased you like the photos. B&W isn’t the way I usually think, although the ability to try photos out in B&W really makes it much easier. As I mentioned, this photo was already almost monotone, which made it easier. A new phone? Exciting! But I know about trying to figure out how to use it. 🙂 Best of luck. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Thanks Janet, it surely takes time, but hopefully the end result will be worth it. Just have to re download all the editing apps I normally like to play around with…
Ahhh, yes. What fun. 🙂

It’s a tie between one and three..
Thanks for weighing in. I appreciate your visit.
janet
I love the spookiness of the middle image. Very atmospheric
Magical atmosphere in all three of them!
Thanks, Hanne. Have a wonderful day and thanks for stopping by.
janet
You too, Janet.
I like the eerie feeling too – and such a whisper light feel as well.
Thanks! Sometimes eerie and peaceful are very close and it simply depends upon one’s frame of mind.
janet
I agree 🙂
Oooh, number 3! So ethereal. And kinda spooky.
I know. The fog does that. Enjoy your day, Jann.
janet
I also like the third shot, but the choice is difficult…
That’s OK. Much better than if you didn’t like any of them. 🙂 Thanks for the visit. Hope your day was great.
janet
Another beautiful set of photos. I prefer #3. The trees look so defined and the over-all tone is very dramatic.
Thanks for stopping by and I’m happy you liked the various edits. 🙂
