Weekly Photo Challenge: Half and Half…half of Los Angeles

This week’s photo challenge theme, “Half and Half“, will be interesting!  I’m tempted to take a photo of a carton of half-and-half just for fun, but since I don’t have any and another trip that involves going out in our hot, humid weather doesn’t appeal, I’ll head for my files to see what I can find for inspiration.  The halves may be literal or figurative and the sky’s the limit.

From the Getty Museum, perched high atop a mountain in Los Angeles, you can see more than half the city and the surrounding area.  Even without the magnificent art collections and the beautiful gardens, it would be worth taking the time to visit simply for this. Not everything about the City of Angels is angelic, but from here, the view is certainly heavenly!

IMG_5256This is where the panorama feature of the iPhone really shines.

  1. Tish Farrell says:

The iphone panorama is amazing. It might almost persuade me to get one 🙂

    • Tish, this is the first smartphone I’ve ever had and my husband insisted I needed the iPhone for the camera and the panorama feature. Now more companies have great cameras and probably have the panorama as well, but as conflicted as my feelings about Apple are, I do love this phone (5s.)

  2. Sandra says:

    Lovely photos Janet.

  3. Amy says:

Amazing shots through iPhone, Jenet! Love both. 🙂

  4. I thought it was the Getty – those angles and divisions create a wonderful contrast as does nature’s beauty against a city. Always nice to have a phone that fits in your pocket 🙂

    Happy weekend Janet

    • Size is one of the great things about a camera phone, that’s for sure. I had my Nikon on the trip, but decided not to carry it around for this day. Have a great weekend yourself. 🙂

  5. I’ve heard the Getty is amazing: architecture and what’s inside. Artful architecture and places that intrigue and beautify are so important. (phones with cameras make life so much easier with less to juggle and keep up with)

  6. Lena says:

I agree with you… the panorama is really a great photo.

  7. bikerchick57 says:

Love the photos! Would like to see LA from that viewpoint some day.

    • It’s truly stunning and the museum is free. Parking is $15 but you can go to their other site in the same day and not pay for parking again, so it’s not a bad deal, especially compared to many other museums.

  8. A wonderful view and I love your take on this prompt. Can I send some of our freezing cold weather to you?

    • We could take at least 10 degrees less, if you can manage it. And while you’re at it, could you arrange sending some of our rain to California? 🙂

  9. I enjoy the panorama on my IPhone and DSLR. You captured the Los Angelos area beautifully. There’s a bit of pink in the sky that balances the bougainvillia on the left of the photo. Nicely done Janet ..!!!
    Have a great weekend !!! 😊

  10. Trisha says:

Those views of Los Angeles are the loveliest I’ve seen! (I’ve only seen it in person from I-5, which didn’t present a very flattering picture.) I haven’t taken a panoramic shot with my iPhone yet but I’m so impressed by the landscape photos I’ve taken with my iPhone. After seeing your cool panoramic shot, I’m eager to try one for myself!

By the way, I thought I was already following your blog so I was surprised to see that I wasn’t. I’m going to fix that now!

    • Nice to have you, Trish. 🙂 LA probably looks better from this distance, but from here it definitely looks splendid. I have a tendency to forget that I have the panorama option, but it’s one worth using. Enjoy your experimenting!

  11. Talk about a view! I never think to take panorama photos, but now I really want to give it a try. I did actually just upgrade my phone, so the camera isn’t as pitiful anymore! It makes it much easier to use the panorama function (supposedly) so now I don’t have any excuse not to.

    • Hannah, they’re really easy, once you remember to use the option. I used to envy them on other people’s sites and now I enjoy taking them myself and sharing. They give a different feel than an ordinary photo of a great view. Have fun!

  12. Cathy Ulrich says:

Great photos for the prompt, Janet. Beautiful photos of LA!

    • I think LA might best be viewed from this height and distance, Cathy. 🙂 I loved being able to see as far as the ocean as well, nature balancing out the city a bit.

  13. Amy Reese says:

    Stunning views, Janet. Nicely done!

  14. What a spectacular view. I’d love to see LA, a place that I only know through movies. I guess it would feel like a deja-vu to walk the streets there.

    • I wasn’t really in LA much, except when we drove through on the highway. I was mostly in Pasadena, which is quite nice. But it’s all one huge, metropolitan area. The time there served as a counterpoint for the time we spent driving up the coast and in Napa. Such a diverse state!

  15. The photo with the flowers in the foreground is gorgeous! The second one reminds me of my trip to LA. We were to the Griffith Observatory and I spent a good ten minutes taking panoramas from there!

    • Our daughter decided to drive up to the observatory at night so I could get the view. Unfortunately, there was an event at the theater and it not only took us about an hour to get up to the top (over a distance that would normally take a very short while), but when we finally got up there, there was nowhere to park. We did get a rather nice view on the way down, but this view was much better, at least for this trip. 🙂

  16. hereisandrea says:

Stunning shots janet! LA just might be going on my list of “must see” places!

  17. I had the same temptation since I did have half and half in the fridge, but I’m glad you didn’t make that extra trip to the store. Beautiful submissions, especially the panorama.

  18. seeker says:

Janet, From the distance, LA does look very picturesque. Well done. Perpetua.

  19. I’ve managed to avoid LA so far in my life. But if I were to visit, this is probably the perspective I would like to take. It does look pretty from your viewpoint, Janet.

  20. rxfrazier says:

I’m with the pano crowd. Nice split in both directions. Regarding the carton of half and half, you have better restraint (or, maybe, taste 😀 ) than I.

  21. Tina Schell says:

Lovely choice Janet – gotta update my Iphone; still have a 4S. But every time I look at doing it there’s another new one just around the corner and I decide to wait. AAAARGH!!!!
