Lena, it would definitely hurt if you hit any of the needles! I got very close, but also very carefully!

Ouch! (But beautifully captured).
The desert has so much beauty, but much of it is very inhospitable to people. Birds do quite well, making homes in cacti. I’ll have some good photos of that at some point soon.

🙂 Very true, Allan. My husband says that all holidays other than Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving, are merely to sell cards and other paraphernalia and he ignores them. I dislike that Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays have been smushed together and the significance pretty much removed.

Wow, that is an amazing color!
It’s an unusual color for a cactus, Laura, which makes it stand out all the more in the desert.

Now that is just nasty; this plant has really adapted well to it’s harsh environment.
Charlie, I believe cacti were created this way, just perfect for their environment. If they had leaves, they’d lose too much water. It’s amazing how hospitable the birds and animals find them, though. If you’re careful, you can eat cacti, or their fruit, if you know which ones are good. Definitely lose the needles first, though!

I’ve lived in deserts for the past 30 years or so. I love these cactuses (cactae?). But is it really that color or did you “flavor” it post edit?
This is really the color these are. I may have saturated this one slightly, but they are beautiful pinks and purples, something I’d never seen before this year. Obviously they’ve been around for a bit or they wouldn’t be so large. Quite nice, aren’t they?

Yes, VERY nice, and love that color, too. The ones I’ve seen were a dark green.
