There were so many beautiful doors in Basel. We walked and walked, through wide streets and narrow streets, past doors that led to homes and those that led to businesses. Basel was acknowledged as the city name in 374 AD and there are homes that date back to early in the second century. You can see the dates right on the homes. This photo doesn’t show the date, but it shows a sample of the beauty found in the doors to the city’s homes.

it’s a wonderful place, I agree! we were there for a school trip. the teacher asked how the people here are called (they are basler not basEler). my friend said: basilians! oh my…
I wish I had a basilian…bazillion dollars. 🙂 I think most of us would think “Baseler” was correct. We only saw the downtown and nearby area as we were walking, but it was lovely. I’d like to go back some day.

Love to see that town. Love the door.
We enjoyed the city greatly and having someone to show us around was a tremendous bonus. There were so many great doors. If I’d stopped for shots of them all, we’d never have gotten very far. As it was, I was continually stopping for photos of something. But then, that seems to be a daily hazard since getting my iPhone. 🙂

This is a beautiful door, Janet. Everything about it makes you smile as you admire the craftsmanship. 🙂
Judy, I could still be there taking shots of doors and other beautiful scenery. Glad you enjoyed this beauty. It makes me smile, too.
I love all the detail on the door!
Amazing, isn’t it?

I agree! 😀
Beautiful door indeed. I love the carvings and what seems to be a crosshatch pattern inlay in the lower panel – good choice!
Thanks, Norm. Glad you enjoyed them. One of these days when it warms up a bit, I’m going to take my camera and walk around Naperville. The large homes in the downtown area all have lovely doors, if I can just get over the feeling of trespassing. 🙂

Wow! I didn’t realise that Basel dates that far back in history. Quite an impressive door there.
There were lovely doors everywhere we went. So much fun and so much history.

I used to go to Basel on business quite regularly and often had time to wander around the older part. Zurich’s even better, if you ever get the opportunity.
I’ll keep that in mind, although the reason we were in Basel is that’s where we flew in and out on our way to France.

That’s a beauty, all right! I can’t imagine living in a building dating from so long ago! Around here, a building that dates to the 19th century is “old”!
I know what you mean about “age.” 🙂 Probably some of the oldest dwellings I’ve seen recently are cliff dwellings. Not many doors there, though.

Such a lovely door – wow.
I’d love to have one like ti.

Living in a country where the oldest door I can see is on a house that might be 400 years old, makes me seriously jealous of being able to see structures that date that far back. I am glad that they are still in existence. This is a beautiful door, regardless of how old it is.
I’m glad they’re still there as well. But you’re right. The beauty is timeless and ageless.

Wow, now that is one exception piece of woodworking! I can’t even imagine all of the hours that went into producing that single front door… It’s incredible.
I know what you mean, Hannah. Wouldn’t it be something to be able to make something like this?
janet
What a beautiful old door. It’s good to see it so well-preserved.
I agree! There were a lot of great doors there.

What a beautiful and elegantly carved door.
Large enough for Gandalf! 🙂

🙂
I adore the doors of Europe. I just love Europe! Great photo Janet!
Thanks, Nicole. I plan to go back to visit my s-i-l and b-i-l in France once more this summer and I can’t wait.

Wonderful!!!
The wood and detail on that door are gorgeous. Great door today!
It would be great to have such a door or to be able to make such a door. Thanks for stopping and commenting as well.

MP!
That is a grand entrance–beautiful!
What a great door! It amazes me that people still live in buildings this old, I think it’s really cool. I’d love to tour some of these old houses.
It would be fun to be able to go inside, Shelly.
