Sally D’s Mobile Photography Challenge: Nature…invasive beauty

In the desert as elsewhere, there are invasive plants. Often invasive species are beautiful, just as evil people can be the “nice neighbor.” I don’t know what sort of plants these are, but my mom told me how they began to take over the next door neighbor’s yard. Eventually he cut them back, although they’ll likely make another break for it. In the meantime, they do look beautiful, just right for Sally’s “Nature” theme, and something in the desert that doesn’t have spines.

You’re so right about invasive species sometimes being beautiful. These are a great example.

  2. When I did desert studies unidentifiable flowers like that were known as DYC’s or d@mned yellow composites. They add lot of color. Will you be there for the spring bloom. Nothing more beautiful than the desert in bloom.

    • I’m sure someone knows what they are, Carol, but I don’t. 🙂 I won’t be in the desert in spring unfortunately. As you say, it certainly is beautiful then. But even in January, there was beauty.

    Definitely a lovely bright patch.

    They are bright and sunny!!

  5. Dan Antion says:

    They certainly are beautiful

  6. Janet, indeed invasive can be deceptive in their appearances. Those are sweepingly cunning. Happy Photo Challenge.

  7. A nice splash of color for today, Janet.

  8. Lena says:

The light in this picture is lovely.

  9. A bright and sunny splash of colour – lovely

  10. “Weeds” are all a matter of perspective… I never understood the people who want to rip out lovely little dandelions, or other wild edibles. I’m glad you did these beautiful invasive plants some visual justice here.

    • I’ve never tried dandelions because there are too many people who spray their lawns. But I understand they’re quite tasty when young. Glad you enjoyed the photo.

I love the light you have caught for these flowers it just makes them glow. Lots of imported garden plants have become invasive over here and are choking out the natives.

  12. Suzanne says:

Weeds can be pretty. Your photo makes them look cheerful.

  13. Amy says:

What a beautiful capture! Weeds, unloved flowers. 🙂

    • “Weeds” are good when they’re not in a space you want to use to grow something else. Dandelions are wonderful wildflowers when not in my yard, but when they take root here, it’s war and I plan to win, digging them up one at a time. 🙂

What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, that or the other thing.
