Yes, a bit of trickery in the title, but the Chicago Institute of Art IS also known as the CIA.  Here are two shots from it, the second naturally B&W with only a bit of edging added. Stop by Sally’s site to find more beautiful examples of black and white photography from talented photographers.

  1. nice work. The second is very interesting.
    Felt Escher-esque,

  2. prior.. says:

Ok! You got me with the CIA! Hah- very fun and love the stairs

  3. Excellent Janet. The staircase photo has that Audrey Hepburn feel to it.

  4. Dan Antion says:

These are beautiful photos, Janet. I love that staircase! It just looks like it could float away.

  5. Janet, happy almost autumn…your images are made stronger with the monochromatic qualities. I enjoyed the angles and lines of the first and the patterns of the second. Happy Photo Challenge.

    • Good morning, Sally, and thanks very much. There are signs of autumn here, but summer is still in the ascendancy and I’m enjoying it while I can while appreciating the cool nights! Have a wonderful week. I’m heading to Philly on Thursdays to help our daughter do some moving, so I’ll wave as I go by. Wish I had time to do more, but it’s a whirlwind trip: day out, two there, one back, and work the next day.

  6. Laura says:

I really like the way you caught the person on the stairs. It looks like they posed special for you.

  7. Wonderful images. I just love that second one, and that staircase gives the image a question mark frame

    • I’m still surprised by how much I like some shots in B&W. The second one was metalwork on a gate, if I recall correctly, one in the museum. Without the context, it becomes just a cool design.

  8. Your first photo is outstanding, Janet. The shapes, lines, and tonal range are the perfect backdrop for the person on the stairs. The fact that that you captured them at the last instance in the window adds an element of motion that puts the photo in a class by itself.

  9. bythebriny says:

I love the swoop of that staircase!

  10. Amy says:

What awesome capture of the stairway!

  11. Emilio Pasquale says:

Both are great and work really well in black and white.

  12. You have such an eye for unusual patterns and geometric shapes. This one looks so abstract yet formal, like something generated by a computer, I wouldn’t have guessed was a photo at first.

  13. RuthsArc says:

    What a wonderful staircase.

What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, that or the other thing.
