According to some cursory research (I was curious too) Colonial people generally used dried corncobs. Makes sense – they were cheap and plentiful and you don’t necessarily need something that’s really soft, if you use it carefully.
Yikes! You’d have to be very, very careful indeed. I think leaves might be a better choice, except in fall and winter. 🙂
Yeah, I’d like that better too. At least they weren’t talking about shoving anything where the sun doesn’t shine – it would be more of a gentle scraping motion.
