Thursday doors…holy doors

First Baptist Church in Pasadena, California has been around sine 1903.  Its beauty drew me in, but the doors to the church were locked.  After ringing the bell and explaining to the secretary my desire to see the inside, she not only let me in, but told me all about the church.  There were a few lovely doors to be seen as well, although the bright California sun sometimes made it difficult to get a good shot.

Details, details, details, and. Dan and Norm, you’re going to love these.

Comments
  1. I really like the handles on the last door!

  2. Dan Antion says:

Wow! You are so right, Janet. I love those amazing door handles! Add to that the beveled glass panels and I’d give those doors an A+.

Kudos to you for asking to go inside and finding an accommodating person. That’s always a good feeling.

    • It’s a shame that such beautiful buildings have to be locked up, although I certainly understand why they do. It’s especially sad when the building is a church, where people might want to go to pray or for comfort.

I knew you’d like the handles and the rest. 🙂

  3. Great that you managed to get inside, Janet. I love that first shot, it would make a lovely painting.

How lovely. And how nice that you got a private tour!

  5. I love the circles on the door in the second photo, Janet. A lot of time went into making them.

The handles are nice but I love the door with the circles. How nice that they let you in.

  7. Norm 2.0 says:

Awesome stuff! Good on you for ringing the bell. As Mom always said “good things can happen if you ask nicely” 😀

  8. Leya says:

Lovely people who let you in! Love the handles there – very unusual.

  9. jesh stg says:

Wow this is old! I love Pasadena – still a lot of character around! Great door, Janet:)

  10. Su Leslie says:

Fabulous door handles in that last shot. And the doors aren’t too shabby either 😀 Wishing you a great weekend.

  11. Tina Schell says:

I love them too!!! Lovely spot beautifully captured Janet

  12. I love how old churches were built

    • To me, they’re full of awe and reverence, even though many are often barely used any longer. Sometimes they were built for the glory of man, but to me they show the glory of God.

Oh how pretty! Love those handles! So glad she gave you a warm welcome 🙂

  14. Nice doors, but I love the hardware. I am mature enough to remember when church doors didn’t have to be locked, and one could visit anytime there was a need. I always find it kind of sad that we can’t visit or pray at a church except for when there is a planned service. Sad reflection but nice post.

    • I so agree about the locked doors, Judy. In France, we’ve still been able to get into almost all the churches, which I love being able to do. Different times, that’s for sure.

The door handles are amazing – but so is the door with the connected circles. I love it!

It would never have occurred to me to ring the bell on a church door. I don’t think I’ve ever even noticed a doorbell on one before. Lucky you that someone was there and let you in to look around!!

  16. Those door handles are marvelous! The wood, and panels are lovely, and that door with the ring design is neat. Great find, and it was awesome that they let you in and shared some history with you.

Great idea for Your post. Your photos are very beautiful and I enjoyed to see. Have You taken photos inside of some churches?

Here is an example showing what I mean.

    Ships inside churches

    Surprising – maybe.

    • I’m glad you enjoyed the photos, Sartenada. I have taken photos inside churches, but for Thursday Doors, it’s just doors. Thanks for stopping by and enjoying them.
