Many cities now feature public art in the form of sculptures of various kinds. I love it. Lately, I’ve noticed a new sort of art…on power boxes of some sort. Here are a few I noticed in Billings, Montana. Taking photos of doors is an addiction, one I indulged on even when on vacation.
I love the idea of this type of public art on normally boring grey (at least in our area) boxes. May this idea spread to boxes near you.

They are so much better and interesting to look at now, Janet. In some cities here I’ve seen a few powerboxes given a more colourful appearance and it makes a big difference.
It really does, Jean. My question is who pays for them? I’d prefer cities not spend their (that would be “our”) money on them because there are so many other things that need to be funded/done. But I do love the beauty a/o whimsy of the decorated boxes.
Here the various city and town councils have a fund for arts projects and volunteers do the work.

Doors + art = wonderful murals that I’m so glad you shared. I have not seen anything like that, but I sure do appreciate the talent required to create them.
And they really add to the attractiveness of an area, don’t they? We have one in Naperville, at least that I’ve seen, but Billings had them everywhere. It’s a trend I’d love to see catch on, so long as tax money isn’t going there. 🙂
Great finds Janet. I really love this idea of beautifying what are otherwise urban eyesores. I’ve seen them in quite a few places now. Hopefully it keeps spreading.

The first power box art I ever saw was in Jeffersonville, Indiana, of all places!

Those boxes definitely aren’t boring! My father was from Billings – not sure he would have appreciated that art though. He was conservative.
I’m conservative and I loved them. 😊. But I’m sure not everyone likes them.
The one in the center with the brick… are the frames also part of the painted art, or are the frames real? That’s amazing how 3-d some artists can make their work look. Most of the arts projects like this public art is funded through grants. Someone on the city staff does the research and grant writing to find the money for it. So not very likely coming out of taxpayer pockets. Yes, as much as I love them too, I can’t see choosing decoration over infrastructure either.
Hopefully that’s where the money comes from because I love the look and hope more places adopt it. The frames are part of the painted art, although they look real. 🙂

They’ve been painting the boxes here for a number of years and I really love it. Some of them are quite interesting.
I especially like the 2nd photo. I had to study it for a while and I still can’t figure out if those are actual frames mounted on the side of the powerbox.
They’re just painted on but I had to look twice and I was there in person. 🙂 I love the trend and hope it takes off everywhere.
