I’m joining a new (for me) photo challenge today. Jude combines teaching and challenge at Travel Words, this month with the focus on light, this week looking at using light and shadow.
This week’s assignment – Look for shadows. Strong light, casting well-defined shadows, can create interesting abstract images. Layering light and shadows brings a sense of depth to an image and can convey mystery.
Here are a few of my favorite shadow shots, the first one taken in the living room of our home in Ohio.

This shell on the beach at Cape May, New Jersey had a lovely shadow.

While my husband attended an IT convention in San Francisco some years ago, I was free to wander and explore the city. The shadows and reflections in this pond made gave this photo a delicate Oriental feel.

Don’t forget to look up. This is above the entryway to one of the libraries in Naperville, Illinois and on this sunny day, it was particularly eye-catching.

If you’d like to join, I’m sure Jude would love to have you. Here are the “rules.”
- Create your own post with some information about how you composed the shot.
- Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
- Add the tag #2020PhotoChallenge so everyone can find your entry easily in the WP Reader
- Get your post(s) in by the end of the month, as the new theme comes out on the first Sunday in June.
A really great selection of shadows Janet. I do like the shadows on the pond, very oriental
Pauline, I really love that one and may have to make a print of it one of these days.
light and shadow are magic. you’ve captured them very well here. i especially like the first one
Thanks, Beth. That’s one of my favorites as well, just something that caught my eye one sunny day and made me grab my camera. Enjoy your day.
A lovely selection Janet. I love the different types of shadows you have selected, the first one is very interesting. And the pool does look like a Japanese painting. Thank you for joining me 🙂
Thanks for hostessing, Jude. Next week we have #2 on your list, is that correct? Just trying to make sure I’m on the same page as everyone else. Happy Tuesday.
That’s right, #2 for May. A slightly more challenging task!
I like all of these Janet, especially the first.
Our house in Ohio had lots of huge windows, so as you can imagine, we got lot of cool shadows.
Love the variety, Janet!
Thanks, Sue. I did try for variety. 🙂 I hope you’ve been enjoying your day.
Nicely sociable, on video calls!
Loved your shadow play, especially the library sky lights. BTW, when I clicked the link from my email to say you’d made a post, it went to a 404 page instead. I got here from that page’s sidebar link to this post.
Thanks for taking the time to find the post, Madison. I have an idea why that might have happened, but no idea how to fix it. 😦
lovely images of shadows! 🙂
Thanks! I love shadows, so i had to decide which photos to use out of the many I have.
Very cool, especially the pond. It looks like a painting. I get some shadows with my concert pictures occasionally, mostly by accident.
The water shot turn out really well. Glad you liked it. I enjoy shadows, but sometimes they can be a problem.
Lovely pictures. The pond shot was really nice.
Thanks very much. It’s one of my favorites. Appreciate the visit and comment.

The shell is my favorite. Something about the organic curved lines and the grainy texture along with the shadows and grayness.
Classic, timeless, elegant – all at once
An Audrey Hepburn sort of shell.
That first is nicely atmospheric, Janet. Great pics! 🙂 🙂
Thanks, Jo. I hope your Thursday’s been wonderful so far.
It has! We actually walked out to a beach this morning, Janet. Seventh heaven 🌞🏖️💕
Oh, what a delight!! Restrictions on businesses are easing a bit here in Arizona this week and next. We’ll see how that goes. I’m ready to walk in a few other places, too.
