Once upon a time I hunkered down by one of the lakes at the Preserve to relax and keep an eye (and lens) on one of my favorite birds–the cormorant. I’ve previously called the the U-boats of the bird world. They’re silent, deadly, and can hunt underwater for long periods of time, coming up a completely different place than where they dove. As usual they were fishing and my camera was clicking, although the first round wasn’t quite in focus. But the second round…
…gone fishing and…strike! Oh, yeah, I love Fish Fridays!
I’d be happy to help if you need it. 🙂

Going down. No, I don’t chew my food! What of it?

Hmmmm. Didn’t go down. Let’s try repositioning.

I think I’m burning up all my calories just trying to eat this thing!

Drat! Dropped it. Let’s try again.

WHAAAAAT! Where’d it go??? Something fishy’s going on.

Gotta say, I have no egrets! Thanks for dinner.
The cormorant tried to get this fish down for quite some time, back and forth, up and down. Then he let it slip from his mouth. As I had my Nikon to my eye, I didn’t see the snatch until the egret and fish appeared in my lens. Thankfully I managed to snap a few photos. The cormorant flew off in frustration; the egret flew off with his takeout. You could probably see my smile from wherever you were at the time, although maybe you thought it was the Cheshire Cat. But it was me.
Great patience, Janet … and thanks for the smiles for my Monday morning.
Glad you enjoyed it, Frank. I know I did. 🙂
Looked like an exciting exchange! Glad you were there to watch and immortalize the interception.
It was awesome in the true sense of the word, Madison. 🙂
My – what a mouth those birds have. Swallowing those fish is quite a show.
For cormorants with a fish that size it must be a bit like snakes swallowing enormous prey. 🙂 Never did get to see this one swallow a fish, though.
Great series of images and a wonderful tale about it!
Thanks, Deborah. As you can imagine, I was thrilled.
Always fun to be in the right place at the right time!
I know. It was just wonderful. 🙂
Oh, that stinker! Get your own fish, egret! LOL Great shots!
The cormorant wasn’t pleased but what was it going to do? 🙂
A great story, Janet! Thank you for the smile!
Thanks, A-C. I’m happy you enjoyed it, too. It was amazing to see.
I imagine it was!
Beautiful shots, thanks for sharing.
My pleasure. Thanks for visiting and commenting. Both are always appreciated.

beautiful series, Janet! image #1 is a big gulp 🙂 🙂
I can’t figure out how you’d get something that large down, but evidently it usually does.
Fantastic! Well caught – by you as well as the egret 😊
Thanks and thanks on behalf of the egret, although I’m sure the fish was reward enough. 🙂
Interesting photos. I wish I could have seen your smile.
You would have been smiling, too. 🙂
I’m feeling so sorry for the cormorant! If only he’d had a knife and fork 🙂 🙂
True. Hard to handle all that, though, when you only have wings. 🙂 But I’m sure he didn’t starve to death. Lots more fish where that one came from.
Okay, that’s quite a catch you got there. Pun intended. 🙂
It was but a snatch and grab on the part of the egret. It was one of those moments that might never be repeated.
Neat shots, Janet! Hmm, I seem to have developed a gut ache! 😉
Something fishy about that. 🤭😂😂😂
🤭😂😂😂 Buuuurp!
