It may be December, but at Descanso Gardens in southern California, there are flowers in bloom, especially in and around the Rose Garden. Although these aren’t roses, they’re bright and cheerful and if they are as I think nasturtiums, they are edible and also used decoratively with food.

I grow these in my garden every year. I put the blooms and leaves in salads. The leaves have a slight peppery taste. They are beautiful and very tasty. Like your picture.

  2. Beautiful captures … and cheers to the warm and the sun, which is something Cincinnati doesn’t have this time of the year.

  3. Very cheerful colors for the season.

  4. I think those are nasturtiums- mom used to grow them. Love the blooms – as I remember they smelled a little funny…maybe that keeps the bugs away?

  5. Dan Antion says:

So nice to see in December.

  6. Tish Farrell says:

Definitely edible! These ones look specially succulent.

  7. JT Twissel says:

It’s a little too cold up here in NorCal. Those are one of the only flowers I can actually grow (other than roses).

  8. There are always flowers blooming somewhere… A cheerful reminder during the dark, colder days.

Nasturtiums – are they not most glorious of flowers? They make me smile. This past summer I gave them a generous amount of space in our garden for butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. Living on a dairy farm our gardens are well fertilized. The nasturtiums thrived. They took over the beets. Attempted to conquer the black kale. Then spread across the pathway to the fence garden. .I didn’t want to stop their travels – they were putting on such a magnificent show. Alas it took just one night and a killer frost and it was good bye to the good times. But there’s always next year.. .

  10. It is a very beautiful, edible and colorful flower. In Slavonia (Croatia) we call them dragoljub. In translation it would be something like dear love, darling darling or dear kiss. 🙂

  11. Resa says:

Sweet shot! I adore eating nasturtiums, and any other edible flower. I’m sure I have a large bouquet inside of me! 😉

What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, that or the other thing.
