Animals of Tohono Chul…slow and steady

Behold the turtle. He makes progress only when he sticks his neck out. ~James Bryant Conant

Before we were ready to actually move to Arizona, my brother and I went around with a realtor to see what sort of homes were for rent. At one house I walked into the backyard to find a gigantic tortoise! The realtor was quite surprised. I don’t think the tortoise was included in the rent. Although not a speed demon, it got around quite a lot faster than this one at Tohono Chul who also looks a bit morose. It was however about the same size.

Tortoises can tell you more about the road than hares. ~Khalil Gibran

How you start is important, very important, but in the end it is how you finish that counts. It is easier to be a self-starter than a self-finisher. The victor in the race is not the one who dashes off swiftest but the one who leads at the finish. In the race for success, speed is less important than stamina. The sticker outlasts the sprinter in life’s race. In America we breed many hares but not so many tortoises.

Really fun to see this tortoise, Janet, and I thoroughly enjoyed the quotes as well.

This is fun. I am sure you know this, but to own/adopt a desert tortoise you have to have a longevity plan, and it needs to be listed in a Trust of a Will. You also need to provide the proper environment. I wanted one!!! And while I think I could find someone to will it to, our yard would not be conducive to one of these. I went to the Phoenix Tour of Homes one year (to learn about landscapes). One of the homes had built a unique enclosed environment for a few. Loved it. Maybe when I am a millionaire and have a huge home in the hills. lol. PS. Now I just want to see one in the wild, no luck. Hope all is well with the family. Donna

    • I did not know that! I’ve never seen on in the wild although I’ve seen plenty turtles at the Preserve and some are fairly large. We saw a Galápagos tortoise once at a reptile garden in Rapid City, S.D. and it was enormous!!

All’s well here and hopefully there as well.

  5. I would take that as a good omen! When I first moved into my place here, I found a huge toad in the backyard. Happy wildlife = happy, harmonious location.

  6. Amazing creature. Nature will always have my admiration.

  7. Great photo, excellent quote, Janet!!
