Beaune, pronounced close to “bone” but with a slightly shorter “o”, is the wine capital of Burgundy, a walled city with an extensive old town and about half the battlements, ramparts and moat still remaining and in good condition. It’s about 2 1/2 hours by car from Melisey by (mostly) highway, which deposits you near the old town. In the surrounding countryside are some of the most famous wine villages and country of bucolic beauty, including the vineyards and clos of Aloxe-Corton and Nuits-St.-George.
In old town, almost every building has ancient beauty, at least if you lift your eyes above the generally newer business on the ground floor. If you like history the way I do, there’s lots of eye candy to be seen!

Don’t forget to look up!

A typical Burgundian roof, ” toits bourguignons (Burgundian polychrome roofs) made of tiles glazed in terracotta, green, yellow and black and arranged in geometric patterns” (Wikipedia)

Peek in as you go by.

There’s more modern art to be seen as well.

And more nooks and crannies than a Thomas’ English muffin!

Beaune is also home to the Hospices de Beaune or Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune, a former almshouse. But that’s a post for next time. For now, raise your glass of Burgundy, sit back and get ready to enjoy the weekend.
