There were no punkins/pumpkins in the park last week when I took an early morning walk, but there was plenty of frost, at least until the sun rose high enough to touch it.  I thought it would be fun to pair a few of the photos I took with James Whitcomb Riley’s poem.

When the Frost is on the Punkin

By James Whitcomb Riley

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock,
And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin’ turkey-cock,
And the clackin’ of the guineys, and the cluckin’ of the hens,
And the rooster’s hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence;
O, it’s then’s the times a feller is a-feelin’ at his best,
With the risin’ sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest,
As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.

They’s something kindo’ harty-like about the atmusfere
When the heat of summer’s over and the coolin’ fall is here—
Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossums on the trees,
And the mumble of the hummin’-birds and buzzin’ of the bees;
But the air’s so appetizin’; and the landscape through the haze
Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days
Is a pictur’ that no painter has the colorin’ to mock—
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.

The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn,
And the raspin’ of the tangled leaves, as golden as the morn;
The stubble in the furries—kindo’ lonesome-like, but still
A-preachin’ sermuns to us of the barns they growed to fill;
The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed;
The hosses in theyr stalls below—the clover over-head!—
O, it sets my hart a-clickin’ like the tickin’ of a clock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!

Then your apples all is gethered, and the ones a feller keeps
Is poured around the celler-floor in red and yeller heaps;
And your cider-makin’ ’s over, and your wimmern-folks is through
With their mince and apple-butter, and theyr souse and saussage, too! …
I don’t know how to tell it—but ef sich a thing could be
As the Angels wantin’ boardin’, and they’d call around on me
I’d want to ’commodate ’em—all the whole-indurin’ flock—
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!

After an enjoyable extended weekend with friends, my throat has decided to rebel and is rather sore this morning.   That, together with a late arrival home last night, has numbed my brain to the point where any cogent bit of writing is out of the question.  However, I can still share a few shots of our day lilies, which went from completely closed to gloriously open in the short time I was gone.  No sun today, but they still look bright and cheerful.

Oddball photos are simply great photos that don’t fall easily into a category…except for being a bit, well…oddball.  Look for links to other oddball photos here:  Oddball Photos Week 8.

When I see the word “potluck”, I think of those wonderful meals at church where everyone brings their specialty to share and we almost all eat too much.  My dad used to hate these and would only eat when my mom brought, but he’s mellowed over the years and now enjoys them, too.  Potlucks are usually heavy on entrees (meat and cheese entrees in particular)  and desserts and light on lots of healthy alternatives.  This week’s “Sunday Stills” challenge “Potluck” will have no discernible calories and will be full of healthy, delicious photos.

To have a challenge that allows me to choose what I want is great, right?  It is, but it’s also overwhelming when I look at all the photos I have and want to share.  But I’ll put my nose to the grindstone and pick out a couple that I think you might enjoy on this finally-spring-like Sunday in the Chicago area.  To find all the entries for the week’s “Sunday Stills: Potluck”, click on the words.  Then follow the links to lots of great photos.

I should have known!  I’ve been waiting and waiting for a “Reflections”  theme, but decided to use one of my favorite reflections for last week’s “Inside” theme.  Drat!  The good thing, though, is that I can use another photo that I like and have been saving.
