Prior to the end of this walk I’d only seen five white tails bobbing up and down as the deer attached to them, unseen by me, bounded into the woods at a distance. A short while later, I looked up and saw this hawk, one of the advantages about no leaves on the tree being that you can see birds much better. Having only my phone, I did my best in the grey morning to get a photo.
After taking the above photo, the hawk took off. I shot as fast as possible with my phone, unable to really see what I was getting. The hawk flew about a yard from my head before taking off into the farther woods and out of sight. When I got home and looked at my photos, I realized I’d gotten lucky, especially with a phone camera. I did just a bit of editing to bring the hawk out a bit more and came up with this.
Fantastic shot Janet. 😀
Thanks very much, Su. 🥰
That’s a great photo, Janet. I love the way the light shines on his feathers.
I was pretty happy that I got a shot of him flying at all, considering I had my phone. Had to edit a little to get the contrast so he could be seen better in the second photo.
Awesome capture, Janet. You were fortunate, indeed.
And, to have the hawk fly so close to you must have been a bit unnerving.
Good job …
Izzy 😎
He went by so quickly that I didn’t have time to think about it. 😊
PHEW … I’m glad he flew by. : )
Ha! Me, too!
😁
Absolutely nothing wrong with getting lucky. 🙂 Great shot.
Thanks, Judy. 😉. I was very happy.
Hawks almost never pose like that! Seriously, it must have been unnerving to see something with a beak and claws like that flying toward you – congratulations on having the presence of mind to get the shot instead of ducking out of the way. Great picture.
Thanks, Sharon. Great to hear from you. I hope all’s well with you.
Fabulous. I love the sepia coloring too. Lucky girl!
Glad you liked it, Janet. It was a wonderful moment.
Love your lucky shot!
Thanks, Madison. I thought you might. 🥰
Both are really great, Janet! What wonderful timing you have for being there and clicking the shutter!
It was definitely a special moment, Deborah. And a lucky one.
WOW! That WAS a lucky shot! Probably some masterful editing, as well. What a great picture!
Thanks, Marian. Just a bit of editing on the second to better see the hawk. 🤪
That is an amazing shot – would make a great book cover.
Thanks very much, JT. Now I just have to write the book. LOL.
Amazing! I gasped when I saw those wings unfurled!!
I would have too if I’d had time. 😉
Photographing hawks is so magical!
I love them.
Wonderful Pic…never seen one really up close like that in a private person’s photos….
I don’t get many photos of hawks, either or without my Nikon. The iPhone came through for me this time, even though it’s not a print quality shot. I’m just happy I got it!
I say luck AND skill. Nice. You captured the hawks perfectly.
Thanks, Ruth. (Only one hawk, two different shots.) Glad you enjoyed the shots!

What a great story, and what a special connection with nature! It’s not easy to catch a bird in flight, especially when it does exactly opposite of what you expect!
I could tell it was getting ready to fly, but it happened so quickly. I felt quite fortunate.
