Thursday doors…a-door-ned

These doors in an historical area of Philadelphia (but how many areas in Philly aren’t historical?) aren’t just plain doors.  They’ve got that extra something that makes them grate.  🙂  Or grates that make them great?  However you look at it or them, it’s an attractive proposition.

If you have doors worthy of sharing or would just like to see what everyone else has to share, open the door to Norm’s blog, click on the blue link, and walk right into the wonderful world of world-wide doors!  Thanks for being a great doorman, Norm!

    Good day, Charu

  2. Sue says:

    Rather marvellous adornments

  3. joey says:

Beautiful examples of adornment, Janet. The first one has my heart, love that ivy scroll! 🙂

🙂 What a pretty selection, Janet!
Have a very HAPPY last day of August! 🙂

  5. These are truly historic. I love the grates especially the first one. The lock is interesting. But, I’d need someone to pick the mail up off the floor every day. 🙂

  6. Candy says:

Wow! These are great grates 🙂

  7. Jet Eliot says:

Such elegant doors, with the arches, rich wood, old brick, and creative grates too. I have walked many hours through Philadelphia and there are many lovely secrets, like these doors, tucked in unexpected places. Nice post, Janet.

  8. JT Twissel says:

I love them all. I’m a sucker for great iron work. You picked a great place for your signature too.

    • I love the iron work, too, JT. Thanks for noticing the signature. I try, if possible, to put I somewhere in the main part of the photo (to discourage any thieves) but not to detract from the photo…and just be a bit fun. 🙂

I like the ornamental metalwork on the doors this week, Janet. It is a bit like wearing a lacy shawl—more for decoration than function.

    • True, but it could be somewhat of a deterrent against a burglar, as is anything that either slows down or makes noise (or both.) In the main, though, just for beauty.

Beautiful ironwork on these doors! The shapes on the second one reminds me on the Art Deco period with stained glass, what is seen in Germany and Holland’s doors and windows.. Glad you’re back!

    • Thanks, Jesh. It’s good to be back, although I could wish the cabin were close enough to go to over the weekend. 🙂 We had lots of Art Deco touches in our house in Cleveland, but our rental here is 70’s bland and boring.

nice word play (or should I say great… – ha)
and the word that came to mind with your doors is “grandeur”
    peace

  12. Dan Antion says:

Those are beautiful, Janet. I particularly like the one where the iron work extends of the the transom too.

  13. Pistachios says:

Excellent selection of doors! I really like the look of vines on old buildings, fences, etc, so the first door is a clear favourite for me. But I’d be happy having any of these doors on my house!

  14. Those are quite beautiful! I love how fancy the metal adornment makes them look.

  15. I think these doors are spectacular. Nice find, Janet. 😎

  16. marianallen says:

Beautiful work, and great (grate) shots! I love that ironwork and the transoms or high lights or whatever those windows above the doors are called. 🙂

    • Thanks, Marian. Sounds as though you liked them as much as I did. With all the great (not all grate) doors along these blocks, my progress was excruciatingly slow, at least for those with me. 🙂
